The Power of a Lady Boss

The past few years have been a
remarkable display of feminine pride as we’ve witnessed a global unity of women
raising their voices against the gender inequities and injustices that have
plagued our world for far too long. While there is still plenty of ground to
cover, there should be some joyful reflection on all that has been accomplished
as a result of the courageous work of powerful women.
The
expansive field of business has been one such domain to undergo rapid (and
desperately needed) transformation. An arena classically dominated by men has
begun to reap the benefits of finally opening the path to strong, intelligent,
creative women. The workplace has not only started to become a place where
women can feel safe from the sexual harassment, ‘bro-culture’ environment so
typical of the industries past, but a space in which real opportunities to
thrive actually exist. As these doors continue to open, it’s essential we
continue to support, encourage, and lift up our fellow women as they strive
towards phenomenal goals and achievements. We must fight against the negative
notions associated with ambitious business-oriented women. For instance, one of
the most harmful adjectives still present in our daily lexicon is labeling
women “bossy.” That term is horrendously convoluted and is the epitome of a
double standard. Assertive men with strong opinions are described as leaders
and people to be respected. Women with this same (positive) trait rarely
receive such a praiseful review. However, as the tides continue to shift in the
business industry it’s paramount that we do not back off sharing our opinions
or suppress our drive for success. It’s time to reshape the framework. We are
not “bossy,” we are lady bosses and we are here to stay.
In trying
times, it can be helpful to look towards incredible women who have not only
succeeded but achieved unimaginable levels of success as women in power. One of
the most inspiring women in this category is Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors.
The awe-inspiring leader heads the number 8 ranked Fortune 500 company, and, as
if that's not enough, does so in arguably the most traditionally male-dominated
industry. Her story is worth further inspection as it offers incredible insight
into what it takes to travel along the journey of success, but for now, we can
draw immediately from two of her most fruitful pieces of advice to women. Her
first golden nugget of advice is to stop making assumptions. While
superficially simple, upon further thought this may prove the most powerful
mindset to adopt. When we assume that our ideas will be shot down, or assume
that we must be polite and mild-mannered, or any number of things along this
line, we are doing ourselves a tragic disservice. We must rage against such
assumptions and attack every day with unapologetic confidence. Barra's second
line of advice to women is an iteration of one her idols, Eleanor Roosevelt.
She draws inspiration from Roosevelt's famous quote, "Do one thing every
day that scares you." Only by exiting our comfort zone can we truly make
strides towards our goals. Combining these two principles is a great way to get
started (or continue on) a path towards being an incredible lady boss.
